Body Description

展覽 Exhibition

An independent choreographer and multidisciplinary performer well versed in contact improvisation, Yu Yen-Fang approaches the recent #MeToo events in the performing arts field with a dancer’s keen perception to the body.

Despite being skilled at using the body for creation and performance, and having such physical sensitivity, “Why can we not recognize the persons’ intentions? How did this happen?” are questions which perplex Yu Yen-Fang. This work centres on the #MeToo incidents in the dance field and expands through interviews with people implicated, those who helped to gather evidence and those involved in lawsuits, including dancers and performers with extensive experience in physical trainings. Using bodily perception and description as the subject to unlock the body experience, the work attempts to open a door for self/group healing and recovery.

Focusing on the narrative of bodily perception, the work delves into the changes of the victims’ bodies and daily lives, during the #MeToo incident, the aftermath, as well as before and after the crimes were reported. These “evidence” – forever imprinted in the body – may be subtle and hard to notice, making them inadmissible in court. Yet, to the victims, these are undeniable, concrete proof. Through these conversations, each person may find shared experiences that resonate with them.

At the same time, Yu Yen-Fang gathers the physical practices created by interviewees to cope with the emotional turbulence, depression, and anxiety that stem from sexual trauma. Using these “Body Descriptions” as a foundation, she creates an exhibition space designed to provide comfort for both body and mind by curating, distilling, and transforming these practices. This space becomes a place where physical exercises are shared with the public, allowing the body to take over where words might fall short, becoming a channel for mutual support and companionship. Within this space, the audience is also invited to leave behind words, sounds, or objects, and through this ritualistic action, create a symbolic marker for the pain while allowing it to be released.
